Teaching to support rural schools and teachers

Teach art, dance, theatre, English environmental education and sports to children in local communities of the Sierra Nevada. Participate in our  on-site support to rural schools and teachers project. Help to strengthen different curriculum processes to address scholar deficiences in remote locations.

Why does this project need volunteers?

Supporting these processes increases the educational quality of rural institutions and strengthens training of local teachers. Also, it promotes innovation and development of methods and teaching tools.

This is a mutual and unique learning experience, a worthwhile benefit to the community and participants. By being part of this project, you will experience a truly enriching cultural interchange. Children deserve the time and information to develop different skills and gain knowledge that alternatives in education give. To develop activities for free time of children will provide them discipline, promote team work, and avoid negative behaviors. It offers a greater opportunity to inspire our youth to find different ways of diversion and to avoid consumption of drugs.

What skills do you need?

  • Experience teaching or managing groups of children and teens.
  • You must have a lot of initiative and creativity to work with the facilities that are available to you.
  • Be willing to protect the environment.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Spanish.
  • A positive attitude is important as you will be working with children.
  • You must be patient, creative and have a lot of love to give.

Project General Description

With this project we are calling for people from around the world to strengthen community processes or to support public schools practices in different areas such as environmental education, arts, sports, languages and local production processes. Participants have the opportunity to support aspects of school life in educational institutions and to develop activities such as study clubs or extracurricular activities for leisure time of children and youth.

Rural public schools depend on financial support from the Colombian government. However, most of these schools cannot afford to pay teachers of subjects such as art, music, theatre, English, sports, and environmental education. These subjects play a critical role in providing children with a well-rounded education, not just at an intellectual but also at a physical and emotional level.

Misión Gaia supports the strengthening of different curriculum processes to address deficiencies and enable children to have a rounded education so they can acquire knowledge and skills that will help them create a better future for themselves.
