Permaculture and ecological agriculture

Learn about permaculture while participating in local ecological agriculture and bio-construction projects.

Misión Gaia encourages sustainable initiatives. This project is designed for people who want to learn by doing. Travel and learn about permaculture and ecological organic agricultural methods in a practical way with expert local farmers, professionals and other volunteers in farms located in La Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.


What skills do you need?
  • Beginner to intermediate Spanish level.
  • Motivated to work in rural and sometimes rustic locations.
  • Motivated to share knowledge or learn about permaculture and organic agriculture.
  • Enjoy working with a team.
  • Be willing to increase your Spanish skills and share your time with local people.

Period of participation

From 2 weeks to 6 months. 

Volunteer for approximately 6 hours per day, 5 or 6 days per week.

Location

Minca, Bellavista and La Tagua.

Participation fee: 

There is a one-time, non refundable $US 50 contribution for all volunteers to participate in the programs. From 3 weeks participation local accomodatin is available for $US 276, and $US 92 for every week there after. 

Calculate and average of $US 15 per day to cover food expenses.

We offer lower fees for participation longer than 8 weeks, knowledge or professional experience in the field of work. 

     Activities

  • Participate in daily activities of the farm: planting, growing, weeding and maintaining the garden.
  • Manage the ground; preparing for planting, composting, making and applying organic fertilizers and biologic products for pest control.
  • Help on the rural local school garden.
  • Run training sessions for local people in how to use organic waste in the garden in order to reduce it and to generate compost.
  • Bio construction.
  • Processing of foods.
  • Practice farm to market strategies.

  • Accommodationin dorms, hammocks and camping.
