Project description

Assist and strengthen environmental groups promoting conservation of the  Sierra Nevada's diversity. Raise community awareness in the importance of  environmental issues with activities that involve environmental education, respect for nature and adequate use of natural resources such as developing recycling strategies and education in waste management.



What skills do you need?
  • To be motivated to work in rural locations.
  • To enjoy working in a team.
  • You must have a lot of initiative and creativity to work with the facilities that are available to you.
  • A positive attitude is important as you will be working with children. 
  • You must be patient, creative and have a lot of love to give.

Period of participation

All year long, we are looking for people committed to at least 3 weeks. From December to February as well as June and July, we invite participation of more cooperants. 

From 5 to 7 hours per day, 5 days per week.

Location: Minca.

Participation fee: 

There is a one-time, non refundable $US 50 contribution for all volunteers to participate in the programs. This fee goes directly to support our organization costs. There is a fee that covers local accommodation. 

From 3 weeks participation: $US 275, and $US 91 for every week there after. 

Calculate and average of $US 15 per day to cover food expenses.

 



 

Why does this project need volunteers?

Environmental education is crucial for conservation; Minca is a small village where tourism is developing at a fast rate. Misión Gaia   promotes eco-tourism and responsible travel that offers appropriate use of natural resources, creativity and improvement of life quality. We look for volunteers to participate in communities´ empowerment on ecological issues. Participants of the program will support local environmental groups which are key actors on promoting environmental education with locals and tourists.

Activities

  • Support local environmental groups developing environmental education activities such as cleaning campaigns and reforestation. 
  • Participate in flora and fauna identification walks for the design of environmental trails.
  • Manage a creative space for environmental education.
  • Design and develop environmental workshops on issues such as sustainable use of water, proper disposal of garbage, recycling and reusing.
  • Participate in community events for recycling and reforestation.

What is included in the program?

  • Orientation (before during and after participation), training and permanent support.
  • Local transport to your project.
  • Accommodation.
